Japanese promotional poster for Dragon Ball Z Kai Dragon Ball Z Kai (known in Japan as Dragon Ball Kai) is a revised version of the series. It was produced in commemoration of the original series' 20th and 25th anniversaries. Produced by, the series was originally broadcast in Japan on from April 5, 2009 to March 27, 2011. A follow-up series, adapting the remaining story arcs, aired in Japan from April 6, 2014 to June 28, 2015. Kai features remastered picture, sound, and special effects as well as a re-recorded voice track by most of the original cast.

As most of the series' sketches and animation had been discarded since the final episode of Dragon Ball Z in 1996, new frames were produced by digitally tracing over still frames from existing footage and filling them with softer colors. This reduced visible damage to the original animation. Some frames were selectively cropped, while other frames feature new portions added to scenes that were hand drawn to conform to the designated picture ratio.

Much of the original material from Dragon Ball Z that was not featured in the has been left out in Kai, which reduced the total episode count from 291 to 167. The second part of the series, titled Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters by Toei Europe and, lasted 61 episodes in Japan, which was fewer than the previously planned 69. This brought the total number of episodes to 159 in Japan. The International Version of The Final Chapters, however, had a total of 69 episodes, as originally planned. The first and compilation was released in Japan on September 18, 2009. Individual volumes and Blu-ray box sets were released monthly. France was the first international country to release all 167 episodes on Blu-ray and DVD, while the bypassed episodes remain unreleased in Japan.

In the version that is shown on YTV in Canada, the story begins mid-way through the Dragon Ball Z series. Raditz, Goku's brother has traveled to Earth to find out why Goku has not yet destroyed the planet as he was supposed to do. But while as a baby, Goku was dropped (down a huge cliff) and forgot his real mission. Kakarot, Goku's real name battles his brother Raditzs along with former enemy Piccolo and friend Krillin.

Meanwhile, Gohan; Goku's son reveals his hidden powers against Raditz and nearly kills Raditz. However Goku is killed in the end, but Raditz is eventually defeated by Piccolo. Before he dies, he tells them that two evil Saiyans even more powerful then he is, are on route to Earth. The remaining fighters, Krillin, Yamcha, Tien, and Chiaotzu begin their training to battle the evil Saiyans, while Piccolo takes off with Gohan to train him in using his new found power. Meanwhile, Goku has to make his way back on Snake Way to King Kai's where he trains himself in the secret. If there's one word I can say to describe this series it would have to be 'Success' because that's all it's ever been known for, from its very origin Dragon ball z has been helping establish not only itself but the brands that it's been associated with from the now very popular 'SHONEN JUMP' which DBZ help cement as being the leader of an era which was known as the golden era of Manga 16 million circulation Dbz was the main push behind all of that it also helped other big titles come to fruition such as One piece and Naruto and many others. Outside of Japan Dbz built what we now know as 'Funimation' Back in the early 90's Funimation was a very small company that started its first dub with Dragonball and everything they are today is because of the success Dbz has driven also Dbz popularized Anime as a main stream medium globally.
